LITERACY, CRITICAL THINKING, HISTORY, SCIENCE
The fall program will focus on the development and enhancement of skills and strategies necessary for increasing self-confidence in literacy using Social Emotional Learning (SEL). We specialize in focusing on diversity, specifically the African American experience. We chose books and projects to discover and enhance our perspective on literary concepts. We explore the SEL concepts of social and self-awareness, responsible decision making, self-management and relationship skills using several mini projects.
We use a project based, holistic, non common core, spiral skill building approach to teach reading, writing, speaking/listening, critical thinking, and study skills.
The 5 skills are taught together to provide students the opportunity to make seamless connections that are required for performing higher level thinking regarding reading, writing, and applying knowledge.
To ensure that the essential skills and strategies are acquired, we have created assignments and projects that encourage in depth, comprehensive, independent, and creative educational experiences.
We address the SEL concepts of social and self-awareness and relationship skills by completing a critical book analysis, a writing literary analysis essay (differentiated by appropriate ability), and a community crisis development critical thinking project.
We address the SEL concepts of responsible decision making and self-management by completing 4 study skills mini projects on time management, organization, prioritization, and note taking.
